Modern movie rip-offs!

[Vendaval Este]

Old crappy movies seem to have a vintage charm to them, newer ones less so, as there's not much reason for them to be around anymore. However, they do tend to get interesting covers in overseas releases, most notably in Japan.


Terminators
The most blatant of blatant rip-offs, it could only be by the Asylum. The Japanese art even directly rips off the appearance of the terminators, the US/EU cover at least showed them looking a little different. Unmistakably awesome cover, undoubtedly terrible movie, this one looks like many may have been fooled for it being an official sequel.


Transforce
I don't know what this one is, I can't find anything on the director (Neil Johnson) as no one with his name is listed with this film on IMDB (there maybe one, but the actors don't match up) but it looks like a post-apocalyptic humans-vs-robots deal that's riding on the success of Bayformers in style. Reviews for it aren't too bad (3/5 motly, in Japanese), might be okay.


Transbattle
This is actually a Filipino movie called Resiklo, but I imagine that on its own Resiklo was impossible to market in Japan unless it was disguised a little. Resiklo looks ambitious but I haven't heard many positive things about it. Note the Optimus Prime knock-off doesn't appear in the film.

Prototype Terminator
GUESS WHAT IT IS. Can't find any info on this one, folks.


Terminator NEO
Definitely one of the better covers, based on this alone I would guess this was a stylish all-CG movie but I would be dead wrong if tht was the case, from a few screenshots I've seen it's an incredibly low budget affair. Released in 2006, its original title is "Reptilicant" (classy) and stars Gary Daniels kickboxing with a lizardman.


Terminator Planet
Released in other territories as 'Solar Vengeance' and even 'Angry Planet'(!), this is another tediously low-budget affair with a cyborg woman in it that has a lightsabre.


Terminator 2018
I'm very curious as to what the Japanese version of this film does to this, as this is a Spanish horror movie about a dog that is brought back to life with a metal skeleton. The film is called Rottweiler but I don't believe it takes placei n the future, so this one is a mystery.

I wonder how much of a hard-on Japan has for Terminator if so many of these films were trying to ride on its success.

I'm mainly going to post the Japanese covers to these films because they just look better than in any other territory, gonna see if I can find some films that have less to do with robots next.

Resiklo, what the hell that poster is too far off from the actual movie! Trying to deceive the buyers with unreal poster, anyway here's the real deal:


The movie itself was one of the entries for the MMFF ,07(MMFF stands for Metro Manila Film Festival and it was held every Christmas Season) and it won as a best picture, never got a chance to watch the film since I'm on a Christmas vacation in Hongkong on that time but still I'm not quite interested to watch it either. My former boss' friend was also involved in making the movie.

Interesting note, the main actor was the son of Ramon Revilla Sr. who played as Lando in The Killing of Satan. He won again as a senator in this year's philippine election.

Yep, he's the father of Ramon 'Bong' Revilla jr. He was also involved in politics as a senator and later succeeded by his son. He's quite famous in his roles as a hero who uses a talisman against any super natural creatures. His only film I remembered and watched was Elias Paniki(meaning Elias Bat) who also fights against a satanists using a headband with a rubberized bat glued on it.

Mega Shark VS Giant Octopus
Arguably Asylum's Magnum Opus, this cover would certainly make you think that, too bad it's yet again another case of the cover being 100 times better than the real movie. Seriously, this picture is fucking epic.


Metal Man
Harkening back to the days of in-your-face unoriginality that only people living underground could ever be bought in by, Metal Man is a shot-on-shiteo effort that seems to involve a few houses and front lawns as locations, the main costume also uses a Kamen Rider belt I hear. I'm shocked at how the Japanese cover mirrors the real thing, did they just know there was no point in hiding it?


Alien VS Hunter
Known as "Alien VS Alien" for some reason in Japan, this one may actually be a completely different movie from AVH based on a YouTube search. Then again, I've seen nothing of AVH.

I assume Spy Angels was supposed to terrible knockoff of the first Mission: Impossible, Charlie's Angels, and Entrapment. Am I even close?

The disappointing thing is, as soon as you find out the katakana of the directors on the Japanese sites these DVDs are from, and you find the original product, it's usually something really disappointing. Japanese DVD covers for cash-in movies really make them look like they're going to be good.
