I've gotta be honest here I'm probably one of the few people out there who likes this movie despite it's flaws. I've noticed a lot of people just bash this movie adn treat it like it was a major flop (it was not...at least box office wise at the time) and yes I do understand why, it drags on too long at times but in all honesty when I think about it compared to other sci fi out at the time and given it was released in the post Star Wars sci fi craze I guess audiences were not expecting a more slower paced sci fi movie...then again audiences wanted to see the original Star Trek cast back together and the movie sure delivered on that
My question is to those here who have seen it, what is your opinion of the movie

Would this be the original? I'm not in tune with Star Trek at all, the only thing I've actually watched of it completely was the 2009 movie.

Don't worry Invisiblecrane, you are not alone in this regard. While I am personally not a huge Star Trek fan (still enjoy the franchise though), The Motion Picture is a film I enjoyed as well. In fact, the slow and methodical pace is actually one of the reasons I liked it along with the fact that I myself found the story engrossing and visually the film really has aged well in my eyes. It's certainly more of a space opera focused on exploration and discovery rather than slam-bang action; in fact if I was to compare it to anything The Motion Picture reminds me a lot of the 1985 anime film Odin, another slow paced piece of sci-fi pulp that is often hated but I love. So yes, I am one of the few who like Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

Yes, the version I saw was the Director's Cut version which sadly I think is now out of print on DVD. For whatever reason the new re-release on DVD and Blu-ray is only the theatrical cut I think.
