This is basically a teaser for what is slated to be a trilogy of films. To be completely honest, this is pretty generic and the art style only just about feels unique, however, the designs are nice and it is very pretty. A brief interview with the director on the official website talks about how there was only enough room for action in the five minutes they could produce, there are a few details I am wary of though...
"What is the concept behind Azureus Rising? The website mentions that it is a "proof of concept"?
That's right. Azureus Rising is feature film concept. The Azureus film is about the transformation of our hero named Eric. Eric, at the beginning of the story is a troubled young boy who then is thrust into this life changing journey which molds him into a heroic freedom fighter. It's a new take on the classic Hamlet theme set in space."
I know it's too early to judge, but I am really not getting a Hamlet feel from this at all, so I am really hoping the story does something inventive to really pull me in, especially if this is meant to be a trilogy. As for the teaser, I think it's pretty dazzling, though the slow-motion/bullet time could be toned, along with the palm-to-floor posing that has been done to death, I hope both elements aren't too prominent in the final product, action scenes look so much better when they're constantly moving, and if your creations are dripping with detail, don't show it all off immediately, that way you'll provoke a bit of interest for the audience to try and check all the detail out themselves, they'll be amazed further by the amount of details that were not immediately on display at first. Based off that teaser, if this was a game I'd definitely play it (no doubt they'd try and go for one if they take off), it's nice to see Ninja Scroll was cited as an influence though.
"The story of an unlikely and troubled teen forced from his home planet across the galaxy on an epic journey."
This is one part of the concept I'm not too fond of, I'm not a big fan of stories that call themselves "epic", though there are some traces of the original Gundam series in that statement.
