I remember for the longest time people were wondering if The Simpsons would ever get a movie, and in 2007 it finally got one and I was wondering if it's held up well because I do remember the movie getting some mixed reactions, some saying it was like a good episode of the TV show while some saying it was okay but felt lacking. Anyone have any thoughts on the movie?

I watched The Simpsons Movie simply as a 90-minute episode with a bigger budget. That's probably the way I should have looked at it, because honestly I wasn't really impressed by it at all. It wasn't horrible, not by a long shot; there just wasn't much to laugh or get excited about, really. I mean, The Simpsons had already been around for, what, 18 some years before the movie came out? When a film is made based on a TV series this can open up a realm of opportunities for creators and allow them to go above and beyond what they could normally do on television in more ways than one, but when you're working from a show that's been around for nearly two decades, where the hell can you possibly go with it to justify a movie? I mean, yeah, Bart's penis and a "goddamn", but otherwise it's basically a feature length episode with extra shading and a marginally higher frame rate. Eh, whatever. 'Tis only a film.

The Simpsons as a franchise died with Phil Hartman and the episode 'The Principal and the Pauper' from season 9, everything else since then has been a gradual, depressing decrease in quality, and that includes the movie.
The Simpsons Movie was micro-managed by a Fox studios committee in a way the TV show never was, the writers were told to stay away from in-jokes from the show that only the fans would get (Hence Reneer Wolfcastle becoming Schwarzenneger in the movie), and it was an overall dumbing down of a script initially started by John Shwartzwelder back in 1997. I only own seasons 1-10 on dvd BTW, not touching the rest of it.

Alright, since NOBODY is saying anything positive about the Simpsons, I will. Sure, the show will never be as good as it once was, but that doesn't it sucks now. I thought the Brazil episode was great, given it pissed off an entire country. I've noticed that the newer episodes are a bit too sophisticated and too obvious as to what demographic the humor is aimed at. Still, there's time for it to change. A good sign is that Twilight parody in the last Halloween special. They're suspiciously rare in the media nowadays... Newer episodes have far less longievity with me, also, there are tons of Twilight parodies out there. There's a book series called Twishite and there was even that "Vampires Suck" thing (thought I believe that's awful) so no, I wouldn't say Twilight parodies are out of the media's eye.

The Simpsons for me used to be funny, but for me it lost its edge a LONG time ago. The movie for me was the final nail in that coffin; whenever I see people vote it as the greatest animated television show of all time I do sigh in disbelief.

I still watch the show and enjoyed the movie, but I agree with Zach of Manime on part of show dying when Phil Hartman got killed. I LOVED Troy McClure and Lionel Hutz. In my opinion, the show has kinda ripped off Family Guy and South Park in terms of its writing of recent years with more slapstick humor and social commentaries. Not that that's a bad thing.

Ripping off Family Guy is not a good thing at all, now ripping off Family Man? Justifiable, seeing as how that's simply the greatest satirical cartoon ever.
