VZ: I do understand that other people have different opinions. It's just that I can't stand back and let people badmouth moe without given its due and understanding.
"but the fact that is almost exclusively all you apparently watch when it comes to animation in general that is what I don't understand."
Except I don't. I watch lots of regular anime too (mostly mecha). About half of the mecha shows from the 80's and 90's I've seen are crazy awesome while the other half left me bored and disinterested.
I'm a hyper focused kind of guy, what can I say. I don't even play videogames anymore (except puzzle games made with flash).
"It's not that I don't understand the context of the shows you haphazardly adore as they are about as shallow"
Except they're not all shallow and many have lots of heart and and clearly well crafted, you just don't see that or you've been watching the wrong moe shows.
There's a reason why shows like K-On and Strike Witches sold so well in Japan. It's legitimately good.
Me: I am aware you watch mecha shows which is why in my comment I said 'almost exclusively'; as a matter of fact I love myself a good old-fashioned space opera. However, just because shows sell by the truckload does not necessarily mean that they are of high quality to all audiences, an obvious example being Transformers 2 for instance.
Once again though, I can't fathom your constant use of 'you don't get it' sweeping statements; to be pretentious for a second, all art is subjective and open to interpretation, this includes the stuff you enjoy. You can have your opinions that the 'cute-girl' shows you watch are the greatest thing on Earth and I can have my views that shows like Strike Witches and what not are what puts me off a lot of the modern animation at the moment Asian or otherwise; I certainly don't see any 'heart' in those products.
I can forgive you for being 'hyper-focused' but I will say from looking at your posts on other blogs it seems you are trying too hard in getting your opinions across consequently sounding either forced or totally nuts. Stay with your niche if thats where you're comfortable with, but constantly going on and on AND ON about it will only bring more negative attention to you if you force people into 'getting it' especially with some of the disturbingly lewd fanart you had on your old blog. I will give you credit though, your mecha art was very good when I browsed it.
Maybe to you this whole conversation was pointless but as a fan of all animation, moe anime or whatever it's going to be called next week by the fanbase or self-proclaimed 'otaku's for me is a genre that is the current nadir of animation regardless of the country of origin. Sorry dude, that's how I feel.
VZ: Well, I do understand.
And I wanted to say, there are shows that I acknowledge are bad or just stupid but never the less enjoyable (like MM! or Milky Holmes), but there are moe and fanservice shows that are high quality , well written and/or have good wit (K-On!, Lucky Star, Bakemonogatari for example).
The reason I tend to be so vocal on the subject is that I wish other fans of mecha or just regular anime can be just as much a fan of moe. In my experience, I've come to notice that most fans of moe are also fans of mecha and are generally nice but straight up mecha (or regular anime fans) tend to be snobby and unwilling to give moe/fanservice anime a chance.
Me: Fair enough I suppose, well unlike those people I did at least try and give shows like Lucky Star and Strike Witches a chance but I am certainly not one of the converted. Hell, in a perfect world I wish Super Dimensional Cavalry Southern Cross was more recognised by people as I think it's a very entertaining bit of pulpy sci-fi animation, for me that show would be great even without it's ubiquitious mecha. At the end of the day though, fans should be given the choice to watch what they want to watch without unneeded coercion.
We as geeks wish over and over again for things we want other people to do and act like, but hey life is not like that. I'm glad you've given some reasoning for your arguments though, I may not agree with you but at least I have a little more respect for you than I did before. Peace out.
Well at least it's better than 'YOU JUST DON'T GET IT.'
