The director of such anime shows as Tide-Line Blue and hit animes as the Hellsing TV series, Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team, Umanosuke Iida, died yesterday. He was only 49 years at the time of his death, suffered from lung cancer, but always tried to continue working. By the way he was also responsible for (and drew them) the storyboards of Cowboy Bebop and Tetsuwan Birdy Decode. In 1984, a really important year for worldwide cinema itself, he was also part of Haiao Miyazaki's animation team for NausicaƤ of the Valley of the Wind. I miss him already. He did some really good jobs in the past.

The downfall of 'good' cinema/anime is just coming closer to us. In case of Umanosuke Iida I think it just hits the bottom. He had a great and unique view on how mature horror atmosphere should look like. His TV adaption of Hellsing is a great example for this. But now he is fucking gone. My biggest fear is that you will perhaps never (or maybe not?) find such a dark, intelligent AND original way of storytelling and atmosphere in any other modern anime show again. Although the Hellsing TV series may be called 'a bit dated' in the eyes of strict critics or just arrogant people that have actually never watched one episode of it, but nevertheless it is still a good series with a great mixture of a delicate touch of occultism, violence and just good old horror. So in fact any better than most anime shows from today.
